ROCKETS TARGET ERITREA CAPITAL AFTER ETHIOPIA DECLARES VICTORY IN TIGRAY ADDIS ABABA – Rockets fired from the northern Tigray region of Ethiopia have again hit the capital of Eritrea, diplomats told AFP Sunday, while “six explosions” have occurred in the city confirmed by the US embassy in Asmara. Hours after Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed claimed victory in his military campaign against Tigray’s ruling group, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front the “explosions” — which the embassy said occurred “at about 10:13 pm on Saturday night— (TPLF). This is the third time that Asmara has been fired from Tigray since the start of military operations there on 4 November, although the TPLF only claimed responsibility for the first assault two weeks ago. By accusing Ethiopia of enlisting Eritrean military support for its operation in Tigray, the TPLF justified the attack, something Ethiopia denies. Two diplomats based in Addis Ababa told AFP that several rockets fired on Saturday night appeared to have targeted Asmara airport and military facilities, although it was unclear where they landed and what harm they may have caused, as with previous attacks. Eritrea is one of the most secretive countries in the world and the strikes have not been reported on by the government. Last year’s Nobel Peace Prize winner Abiy announced on Saturday night that military operations in Tigray had been ‘completed’ after the army took control of Mekele, the regional capital. Thousands died in the battle, and tens of thousands of refugees streamed into Sudan across the frontier. Throughout the war, Tigray has been under a communications blackout, making it impossible to determine the full toll of fierce combat that has involved many rounds of air strikes and at least one massacre that killed hundreds of civilians.
